The four details that matter first

1. Where the property is. A narrow Uptown lot, a Metairie ranch house on pilings and a wooded acre outside Covington bring very different soil, drainage and access, so the street address alone answers many early questions.
2. The job and its rough size. A fresh driveway, a wider parking pad, a back patio, steps up to a raised porch, a shed or boat pad, or a replacement for concrete that has broken or dropped. Paced-off measurements are enough.
3. The load it will carry. Only cars, or also a pickup, a camper, a fishing boat on its trailer, a hot tub or shop tools. More weight changes how the base, the thickness and the steel are planned.
4. The surface there today. Lawn, gravel, shell, pavers, old concrete or asphalt. When something must be broken up and hauled off, that becomes part of the scope.

Pictures that help the most

Start with one broad view taken from the curb or the back steps, so the surroundings and the house beside the work area are visible. Add close views of cracks, dropped sections, gaps along the house and chipped edges. If you can, snap a picture in the middle of a downpour or just after it, showing which way the water travels and where it sits. On a flat, low lot, drainage has as much to do with a long-lived slab as the concrete mix.

After you send it

The contractor will want to see the place in person. A walk around the lot shows how soft the yard feels, which way it tips, where rain goes and whether a mixer can back in or a pump hose must snake through a gate. Only after that walk can anyone describe the job and name a figure in good faith. Request the resulting scope on paper, listing digging and base, depth, steel, joints, surface finish and drainage, so any two offers line up point for point.
